# Workflow steps

Learn about the different steps that make up a workflow

Build workflows from steps that receive data, evaluate conditions, run actions, and prepare records for other processes.

Use [workflow parameters](https://docs.middle.app/middle-docs/accounts/workflow-parameters) to configure each step's values and conditions. You can also [define workflow variables](https://docs.middle.app/middle-docs/accounts/defining-workflow-variables) to save values for later steps.

## Step types

| Step                                                                                                    | Use it to                                                                 |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| [Begin Step](/middle-docs/product/accounts/workflow-steps/begin.md) | Make inputs from a trigger or manual execution available to the workflow. |
| [Decision Step](/middle-docs/product/accounts/workflow-steps/decision.md) | Route the workflow based on true or false conditions. |
| [Action Step](/middle-docs/product/accounts/workflow-steps/action.md) | Run an app function using values from the workflow. |
| [Bulk Workflow Execution Step](/middle-docs/product/accounts/workflow-steps/bulk-workflow-execution.md) | Run another workflow against a selected record type. |
| [File Export Step](/middle-docs/product/accounts/workflow-steps/file-export.md) | Export stored data to a file for use in later actions. |
| [Create or Update Record Step](/middle-docs/product/accounts/workflow-steps/create-or-update.md) | Save a record in Middle for other workflows or processes to use. |

## Adding a new step

Click the **+** on a workflow branch, then select the step you want to add. Some step types, including **Create or Update Record**, are in the **Advanced** menu.

Open a step to configure its inputs, conditions, or settings. Each article in this section explains a step and how it fits into a workflow.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.middle.app/middle-docs/product/accounts/workflow-steps.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
